The “Corporación Ambiental”
Biomunicipios is a non-profit entity with offices in Medellin and
Turbo, established to provide solutions to the environmental problems
of the marine-coastal zone in the area of Urabá-Darién.
Its objectives include:
• Recuperate and strengthen the environmental culture of the
municipalities, achieving a better correspondence with the principles
of conservation and protection of marine-coastal ecosystems
• Stimulate social training, information and research, applied to the
organization of programs of which the results contribute to increased
awareness on the conservation of natural resources.
• Propose and develop programs aimed at the protection, conservation
and recuperation of natural resources.
The Centre, to be completed in 2010 or
2011, aims at a sustainable basis for ecotourism in the region,
attracting visitors from Colombia and elsewhere in the world. The
Centre will provide various jobs: trained doctors and nurses to take
care of wounded marine animals, aquaculture experts related to fish
farming, eco-guides, or different positions in local hotels,
restaurants and shops. The Centre will ensure the availability of the
required training. As a result, the lives of the local population will
change due to their increased contact with visitors from elsewhere,
and due to the improvement in their economic situation.
