Tea Party: Social Work for Crime Prevention

The Social Justice and Human Rights wing of the Police Department has initiated a novel idea of conducting Social Justice Tea Parties in all the villages across the State. It is really heartening to note that this unique progranmme has become a great success. The Social Justice and Human Rights wings is functioning not merely as a Police agency for effective enforcement of PCR and POA Acts but also as an “instrument of social change” in curbing inequalities in social system and redressing the grievances of the SC/ST people. The tea party programme in villages has been labelled as “Mass Awareness Campaign”.

It is not only the first initiative of its kind in the whole of India but also one of the largest initiatives anywhere in the world in terms of reach, population covered, geographical area covered, multiple messages transmitted effectively but simply through the instrumentality of a tea party. It is also the world’s largest ongoing tea party in terms of the number of people given tea in the 37,000 plus programs all over the state.

The objectives for the mass campaign are as follows

  • To highlight how the Acts and Rules are effectively enforced by the Police;
  • To promote confidence among the members of SCs/STs;
  • To sensitize the society on eradication of untouchabIity and atrocities against the members of SCs/STs;
  • To promote harmony among the caste Hindus and SCs/ STs and
  • To create awareness on the nature of offences and it's gravity to the
