 Job Description
 
  • To lead the teams managing the London Reserves (currently Rainham Marshes & Rye Meads) – their staff, assets, visitor and conservation operations and finances ensuring the necessary strategy, systems, planning, action, and culture are in place to provide effective delivery of RSPB objectives for the London Area.
  • To maintain a culture of high performance, measured against RSPB Strategy and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as breeding birds, membership recruitment, visitor numbers and trading income.
  • To act as the RSPB lead into the Wildspace project and be the first point of contact for Wildspace partners, maximising opportunities for the RSPB.
  • To contribute as a core member of the South East Regional Reserves Management Team, working with Regional Reserves Manager, Area Managers and national colleagues to create the culture and lead change necessary to deliver RSPB objectives on reserves in the South East Region.
  • To contribute as a core member of the London Management Team, working with London Manager to create the culture and lead change necessary to deliver RSPB objectives off reserves in London.
  • To develop reserves staff, assuming responsibility for motivation, morale and welfare; providing annual appraisals and assessments; identifying and advising on training needs and career development; and selecting and appointing staff.
  • To oversee systems of compliance with statutory obligations including health & safety of staff and customers; environmental standards and limits (especially SSSI condition); and funders’ requirements such as procurement, eligibility and cross-compliance.
  • To manage financial, reputational and other risks as appropriate to the portfolio of land and built assets, and associated revenue costs, business operations, visitors and profile.
 Candidate Profile
 

Qualifications:

  • Degree level education or equivalent experience demonstrating learning capacity and attainment.
  • Experience of people and performance management
  • Experience with leading, motivating and developing a team
  • Experience of managing complex budgets and income streams
  • Experience of managing projects, including contracts/contractors and consultants.
  • A strong people manager, committed to reviewing and tackling issues and getting things done
  • An effective systems manager. 
  • Well organised with the ability to cope with a varied and demanding workload.
  • Ability to delegate effectively
  • Knowledge of a how a customer focussed visitor or commercial operation works
  • Knowledge of how nature conservation works – politically and organisationally - in the UK.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues and ecological processes and/or business management.
