Job Description |
|
|
- The Communications Specialist will work with Conservation Program and Education Department project leaders to form short and long-term communication plans for the programs they are assigned to cover.
- Specialists then implement those plans, and associated strategies, creatively using the full range of NWF assets, including policy experts, grassroots outreach, the NWF web site, NWFs CEO and/or other senior leaders, members of the Board of Directors, affiliate leaders and leaders from like-minded organizations.
- The Communications Specialist is expected to create and implement communications strategies for their priority programs that influence public opinion so as to advance the programs goals.
- The Communications Specialist cannot be content with reacting to news, but must seek out or create opportunities to lead the news cycle.
- He or she will be expected to write, edit and produce content for the Media Center or Wildlife Promise blog on nwf.org as well as pitch stories to traditional or new media.
- He or she is also expected to be deft at tactical media that simply records an NWF position in the media, at maintaining message consistency for all the outreach vehicles they are involved with, and at media training and communications, as needed, with internal NWF audiences.
- The Communications Specialist will work primarily with program or campaign staff based in the National Advocacy Center whose work falls under the Safeguarding Wildlife driver, on water, wildlife and lands programs.

Qualifications :
- Qualified candidates for this position must have a college degree in an appropriate discipline (English, journalism, public relations)
- At least three years of experience in campaign or advocacy-related communications or public relation, knowledge about relevant environmental issues, such as climate change and be a quick study of related issues, such as water or land policies, and familiarity with congressional and/or regulatory processes, because NWFs water, wildlife and land programs cut across regions, the Communications Specialist must be able to assist with regional aspects of program or campaign communications, which could include creating state- or region-specific press materials or web content and pitching local press, or assisting grassroots staff in these local efforts.
- The Communications Specialist must have superior analytical, writing, verbal and time management skills.
- Proven track record in media relations and the handling of complex, controversial policy issues.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and follow-through on multiple short and long-term projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently, as well as in a collaborative culture, good interpersonal skills, creative drive and initiative to develop and implement new opportunities for program promotion are a must.
- Experience with media contact software such as Vocus a plus.
