Job Description |
|
|
1) Be accountable for raising public
awareness of environmental issues by providing information to
Governments, NGOs, the media, major groups and communities to enable
them to act responsibly in improving their environment; development and
management of public information exchange systems and mechanisms, the
UNEP internet presence and the Library.
2) Develop UNEP policies and strategies for communication and
dissemination of information, promoting environmental issues, and
informing the general public, UN Systems, Governments, NGOs and major
groups of UNEP’s role in environmental matters. Deliver environmental
information programmes through the use of traditional and electronic
media, audio visual and print productions: bulletins; publications; and
films as well as promotional and special event activities. 3) Oversee
the implementation of DCPI result-based deliverables in the Programme of
Work. Envision and provide leadership in promoting and positioning
UNEP’s brand. Establish new information networks for disseminating the
environmental message to bring environmental issues into the mainstream
of public concern beyond the traditional professional and organizations
spheres of influence of UNEP and UN. 4) Provide advice and assistance
to the Executive Director, UNEP programme managers and other senior UN
officials regarding all public affairs and environmental information
issues. Set graphic presentation standards, including the use of UNEP’s
logo. Provide communications support and advice for UNEP’s fundraising
activities. Keep abreast of and develop new communication techniques,
methods and strategies. 5) Coordinate the implementation of an internal
communications strategy for the successful delivery of the Programme of
Work and the promotion of staff access to information. 6) Effectively
manage human and finance resources by setting performance objectives and
standards, conducting performance appraisals, assessing staff training
needs, and establishing short and long-term goals and objectives.
Provide direction to regional communications staff.

Education:
Advanced university degree (Masters degree
or equivalent) in journalism and/or communications, or a first
university degree with a relevant combination of academic and
professional qualifications.
Work Experience:
15 years of professional experience in
communication, outreach and/or public information at the national and
international level, including relevant management experience. Extensive
knowledge of the UN charter bodies, policy and decision-making
structure, UNEP policy and global environment issues desirable.
Experience in programme/project management and administration is
required.
Languages:
English and French are the working languages
of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in
oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of a second
official UN language is an asset.
Assessment Method:
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this
position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a
competency-based interview.
Special Notice:
