Job Description |
|
|
- Demonstrated initiative, creativity and ability to conduct innovative research
- Demonstrated collaborative abilities in research project development, design and execution.
- Evidence of good communication skills and ability to publish the results of scientific research in various media
- Flexible, adaptive and constructive attitude and approach to work design and work procedures.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team, to interact and communicate effectively with staff, stakeholders and clients at all levels, and to support staff in systematics and phylogenetics research.
- Active support of code of conduct and HSE and the principles of workplace diversity and equity.
- Prepare and test predictive models for spatial distributions of various plant groups.
- Use modern geographic and spatial modeling tools to validate the occurrence and distribution of herbarium and survey records of plants in Australia and develop generalised procedures that can be applied to the Australian flora.
- Investigate common patterns of occurrence, distribution, association of species; detect and characterise areas of endemism and evolutionary hot spots - i.e. areas of high phylogenetic diversity (PD) or high diversification potential (DP).
- Assist with implementation and adoption of GIS and spatial analysis and visualisation technology throughout the programs of the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research and the Australian National Herbarium.
- Work collaboratively with systematists to analyse phylogenetic relationships in environmental space
- Collaborate with botanical information management staff on scientific data, documentation and information management issues associated with research projects.
- Communicate the results of research and analyses orally and in written form to colleagues, industry, the scientific research community and stakeholders.

Qualifications:
- PhD and documented research in plant systematics, biogeography, vegetation history or physical geography and/or spatial analysis research.
- Qualifications in relevant computing or information management field, including a strong spatial component (GIS, remote sensing, resource modelling).
- Demonstrated ability and experience in spatial information systems and detailed familiarity with a range of GIS software.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in spatial and environmental modeling along with visualisation software applications
- Demonstrated ability and experience in data and information management in biological collections and sound knowledge of biological collections database design.
- Demonstrated ability to implement, maintain and use computer systems to perform complex analyses in order to present biodiversity data using geographic information systems, relational databases and/or web applications.
