 Job Description
 
  • To secure regular, effective and influential media coverage for the RSPB’s conservation and policy priorities.
  • To build close relationships with relevant journalists through regular contact.
  • To be well-informed about environmental and conservation issues and the RSPB’s Marketing and Public Affairs priorities.
  • Creating and selling-in news stories in support of priority campaigns.
  • To be in touch with media sector trends, including environmental, science and policy coverage as well as relevant specialist media.
  • To use social media and other new channels as part of communications campaigns.
  • To be aware of trends, particularly branding, campaigning, fundraising, CSR and corporate transparency issues and be aware of other NGOs’ corporate positioning.
  • To help monitor and manage sensitive positioning issues, providing responses to criticism of the RSPB.
  • To proactively maintain contact with, and seek out stories from, conservation and policy colleagues.
  • Preparing briefings for spokespeople as necessary.
  • To provide strategic guidance and advice to RSPB staff on the planning and implementation of PR work.
 Candidate Profile
 

Qualifications :

  • Degree or equivalent.
  • PR/marketing/journalism qualification, or other relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience of working in or with the media, preferably at a national level.
  • Working for an environmental NGO or voluntary sector organisation.
  • Experience of working in a busy Press Office, or in a PR agency.
  • Networking with journalists and at events.
  • Proven track record of placing non-news items in appropriate publications and progammes.

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal communicator, able to present effectively to senior staff and external contacts e.g.journalists and media teams of partner organisations.
  • Excellent written skills including summarising complex information with the ability to provide succinct and impactful copy to tight deadlines.
