Job Description |
|
|
- Work with staff and/or partners to ensure that research/monitoring questions for both new and existing programs are well defined, and that data collection protocols are appropriate to address those questions.
- Provide, as necessary, scientific evaluations of existing LPW programs.
- In collaboration with the LPW Executive Director, develop and take scientific lead on new research projects, some of which will have substantial volunteer involvement.
- Conduct research using program databases to answer questions relating to the evidence they provide for occurrence or causes of waterfowl population changes and/or to advance scientific knowledge regarding basic ecology of waterfowl and their habitats.
- Conduct aerial surveys of waterfowl, food resources, and habitats in southern Ontario and the Long Point area, with an emphasis on the needs of staging and wintering waterfowl.
- Devise tests of appropriateness and sensitivity of data in solving questions related to waterfowl populations.
- Provide advice to staff and students on experimental design and analytical approaches for research and monitoring programs relevant to LPW mandate.
- Participate in BSCs National Scientific Advisory Committee and LPWs Scientific Advisory Committee deliberations concerning LPW programs and research.
- Liaise with scientists involved in similar research or monitoring initiatives in Canada and other countries.
- Review articles and manuscripts prepared for publication in the popular and scientific literature.
- Remain current on computer applications relevant to the analysis of LPW data; attend applicable training sessions.
- Present and communicate findings of LPW programs and research to the scientific communities at major scientific conferences and symposia.

Qualifications:
- The LPW Scientist will hold a Ph.D. in biological sciences or an M.Sc. with sufficient and relevant work experience.
- The applicant will have a demonstrated interest in waterfowl and wetlands research, management, and conservation.
- Demonstrated experience in analysis of biological data sets and in conducting independent and collaborative research as well as in managing, evaluating and supervising the research of others.
- The position demands a high level of organization, initiative, personnel management skills, computer skills, analytical skills, and interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience in liaising with scientists of government and non-government agencies is essential, as is demonstrated authorship of high quality scientific papers and reports.
- The LPW Scientist will use the aforementioned skills to promote and advance the science-related objectives of LPW and to supervise, assist and motivate other staff and students in science-related endeavors.
- Additional assets would be the ability to obtain adjunct status at a nearby university and demonstrated ability to raise money to fund research initiatives.
