Job Description |
|
|
- Provide expert advice on economic, social and cultural rights, including by participating in the development of, reviewing, and approving AI reports, campaigning materials, and other documents, to ensure accuracy and relevance, the integration of these issues into relevant AI work, and consistent and coordinated implementation of policies and strategies.
- Provide expert advice on the right to adequate housing in order to contribute to effective strategies for change and to support AI’s Demand Dignity Campaign.
- Assist in developing global strategies for AI’s work on economic, social and cultural, in particular on the right to adequate housing, to contribute to the effective integration of AI policies and strategies on economic, social and cultural rights into AI’s work.
- Develop and undertake research projects on economic, social and cultural rights, participate in field research missions, and help develop appropriate research methods for AIs work in this area to contribute to the effective integration of AI policies and strategies on economic, social and cultural rights.
- Assist in developing training and capacity building programmes and materials on
- economic, social and cultural rights and the Dignity Campaign, including by acting as a resource person for AI sections.
- Represent AI at relevant meetings with governments, international financial institutions, other intergovernmental bodies and civil society representatives, in coordination with colleagues in the team, ILOP, and other programmes and regularly reporting back to the Policy Programme, other parts of the IS, and the movement; develop other professional contacts; and otherwise act as an AI expert spokesperson on these issues to raise public awareness of AI and its calls for action, build support for concrete recommendations for change, and help position AI at the forefront of the human rights movement.
- Responding to queries related to AI’s work on economic, social and cultural rights from the membership, other NGOs and public, seeking advice of the Head of the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Team and the Global Thematic Issues Director as appropriate

Qualifications:
- A post-graduate degree in law is required.
- Substantial knowledge of international human rights law on economic, social and cultural rights is required.
- Proven experience of policy development and research on violations of economic, social and cultural rights is required.
- Prior experience of working on the right to adequate housing is required. Experience of working on economic, social and cultural rights issues within the context of ‘slums’ and informal settlements is strongly desirable.
- Ability to think strategically (to have broad overview of the implications of different options in terms of impact on human rights globally and on AI as a movement).
- Good political judgement (ability to understand and exploit the opportunities presented by certain situations to pursue specific goals: this includes being able to determine what information is needed; what levels of consultation and decision-making would be appropriate; and what impact specific decisions may have on related areas).
- Demonstrated ability to develop and elaborate research standards and methods.
- Experience of setting and adjusting priorities, managing concurrent projects and conflicting demands, and meeting deadlines, as well as experience of working in a team and in cross-programme teams and understanding of the importance of efficient communications for the coordination and effective functioning of teams.
