Job Description
The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is an established policy research institution based in New Delhi, India, since 1980. CSE’s research, campaigns and publications are aimed at sustainable development and spreading mass awareness about the science and politics of development and its environmental implications.
CSE is looking for a Director for its Green School Programme Unit (GSP), a sub-programme of the Environment Education unit (EEU):
About EEU:
The EEU is one of CSE’s younger units. Not in age but in spirit, approach and tone. It targets a specific section of the population—the youth. Its mandate is to introduce the concept of ‘environment’ to the beginners in the field, focusing particularly on the school-going generation. It seeks to do that not by laying out theories and definitions, but by helping its constituency to get actively involved with environment. The unit publishes a monthly supplement called Gobar Times, which is distributed with CSE’s science and environment fortnightly Down To Earth. The other key tool of EEU is the Gobar Times Green Schools Programme (GTGSP), which was launched in 2006 with the objective of using schools as agents for bringing out basic and long-term changes in the mindset and lifestyle of the people. Today, more than 15,000 schools across India are a part of it.
Please visit our website for more details on EEU.
Candidate Profile
Candidate profiIe: We are looking for a candidate who can anchor and lead the next phase of the Green School Programme. EEU has already launched a new programme which is an offshoot of GSP, and the candidate will be expected to take independent charge of this initiative. We are looking for the following qualifications and qualities in the candidate:
  • At least 10 years of experience in the field of environment education.
  • Ability and experience to build a  team for the new programme.
  • Ability and experience to conduct trainings and workshops for teachers and students.
  • Ability and experience to network and independently interact with other stakeholders in the sector, including government officials, educators and NGOs.
  • Ability to explain complex issues of environment and development to beginners.
  • Should be able to contribute to the development of the new manuals, update the existing one, and inject new ideas into the programme.
Must be fluent in both English and Hindi, with good writing and speaking skills. Must be willing to travel across urban and rural centres in India.
While environment-specific academic background will be an advantage, what is crucial is the capacity to view everyday activities and issues through the perspective of environment.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills.
