Responsibilities:

  • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of critical areas of concern related to socio-economic issues, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources. 
  • Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports. 
  • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. 
  • Produces analytical, quantitative and qualitative elements required for the elaboration of documents and reports contained in the regular work programme and extraordinary work assigned to the Unit.
  • Maintains awareness of current issues related to science, technology and innovation, to include relevant policy issues/considerations or other developments in specific country or region concerned.
  • Provides administrative and substantive support to expert group meetings, panel discussions, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, researching and proposing experts, handling logistics, etc. 
  • Participates in technical meetings, conferences, and seminars.
  • Takes notes, draft summary reports, minutes, notes for the files or assessment reports for presentation to the head of the Unit; monitors follow-up actions, etc. 
  • Compiles and analyses the data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals in the area of science, technology and innovation. Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects. 
  • Contributes to the design, formulation, implementation, monitoring and reporting of programmes and project proposals for use in resource mobilization and co-ordinates day-to-day monitoring and implementation of these projects.
  • Prepares inputs on due diligence processes of potential partnership opportunities, under close guidance and in accordance with UN regulations and procedures.
  • Provides support for the discovery, evaluation and selection of partnership opportunities at the sourcing and origination stages.
  • Independently identifies and monitors substantive aspects of the work of the Unit in various regions/countries. 
  •  Prepares charts, graphs and other outputs for reporting and presentation of various data. 
  • Establishes internal databases; sets up, files, stores and manages data and information relevant to the scope of programme/project activities. 
  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
  • Assists in the development, maintenance and sharing of knowledge and intelligence, to inform and position the Unit and Organization to effectively generate and harness opportunities to meet its goals and resource mobilization targets.
  • Contributes to knowledge networks and communities of practice at national, regional and global levels.
  • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in economics, business or public administration, sustainable development, social sciences or related area is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:

  • Applicants to positions at this level who have an advanced university degree in a relevant field of study do not need to have professional work experience.
  • For applicants who have a first level university degree, two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience is required.   
  • Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.   
  • Experience working on development issues in Least Developed Countries, including through research, technical assistance or programme implementation, is desirable.
  •  Experience in providing strategic support to project/programme management and resource mobilization in the context of development cooperation is desirable.   
  • Working experience in the United Nations or similar international organization is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
