Job Description

Job Purpose

  • The position is under the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) hosted by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
  • Under the minimal supervision of the Regional Representative, the successful candidate will assist in the design of experiment(s), survey(s)  and other resarch studies according to Organizational Unit specific project goals and research objectives. Manage the implementation of defined research activities. Evaluate and validate experimental data and contribute to manuscript for reports and other publications as well as presentations/ posters for national and international conferences. Supervise, coach and guide scholars, OJTs, researchers and research technicians. Coordiante and prepare training sessiosn for a variety of people.
  • Conduct analysis of trends in livestock production, productivity, trade and consumption, conducts literature reviews and lead or contribute to the writing of analytical results. Contirbute to field survey design and implementation in the region, paticularly in the Philippines. Monitor livestock development initiatives in the region and maintain databases of those intiatives and implementing agencies and partners, including donors. Supports the work of the regional Communications Specialist by providing links to partners and other ways as needed. Provide basic administrative support to the operation of the ILRI Office at IRRI, including backstopping links to local partners, budget support, managing OCS requests and generally manning the office when the Regional Representaive is not present.
  • This position is based at IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines and can only be filled by citizens and permanent residents of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Assist in designing an surveys and data analyses based on the research outline provided, in the field of smallholder livesotck research in SE Asia

  • Contribute to the development of research proposals including reviewing related literature and providing logistical support
  • Exchange concptual ideas with collaborating partners across the SE Asia region, including other ILRI researchers and seek feedback
  • Coordinate with collaborating partners on their research requirements
  • Verify suggested methodologies and establish parameters
  • Select adequate research tools and equipment based on employed analytical methods
  • Assist in the identification of support staff and assign tasks/responsibilities
  • Guarantee availability of services and supplies

2. Manage the implementation of surveys and other research studies related to livestock

  • Provide literature and data support to scholars and collaborators considering the implementation of experiment(s) including the logistics
  • Assign, monitor and evaluate research activities/tasks performed by collaborators, enumerators and data entry staff and contract workers; provide guidance when necessary
  • Maintain smooth conduct of experiment(s) by troubleshooting and fostering a productive teamwork environment
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOP)

3. Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data related to regional and national data on trends in livestockproduction, productivity, trade and consumption, and on livestock technology development and practices.

  • Summarize and validate data using appropriate advanced statistical tools independently
  • Assist in the interpretation of results in relation to ILRI regional plans and priorities
  • Assist in drafting conclusions to enable necessary actions or decisions
  • Assure maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information

4. Contribute to the preparation of reports, publications, and presentations

  • Summarize research findings and draft manuscripts for publication in referred journals
  • Submit project reports
  • Prepare posters and papers for presentation at local and international conferences

5. Coordinate and prepare trainings

  • Draft training material using readily available published information
  • Prepare necessary supply; identify resource persons; make sure that the logistics are appropriate for defined purpose
  • Responsible for the professional development of Research Technicians
  • Act as resource person for training courses and visitors

6. People Management

  • Supervise the work of collaborators and occasional field survey or data entry staff
  • Carry out performance appraisals of Research Technicians
  • Responsible for the professional development of Research Technicians
  • Supervise or assist students and trainees

7. Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Livestock Science or a related Agricultural Scienceand 4 years of relevant work experience in applied research; or
  • Master of Science degree in Livestock Science or a related Agricultural Science and 1 year relevant work experience in applied research

  • Has some experience with Research management
  • Has good presentation skills
  • Experience with field survey design and implementation to collect primary data from rural farmers and market actors.
  • Familiarity with livestock production systems in Southeast Asia.
  • Has some experience supervising or overseeing the work of staff
  • An understanding of the concepts and their applicaiton of a)agricultural value chains and b) innovation systems in agriculture
