Job Description

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

The Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM) aims to reduce the negative impact of natural hazards, strengthen capacities for disaster information management and enhance regional cooperation and coordination in disaster risk reduction.

This position is located in the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management, Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran. The incumbent reports directly to the Senior Programme Officer under the overall supervision of Director of APDIM.

Responsibilities

With particular focus on APDIM’s host country, the Islamic Republic of Iran as given the Host Country role as main donor to APDIM, this position is instrumental in ensuring APDIM’s work and results are well featured in local, Persian speaking media. Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  •  Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news and reports value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  •  Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, etc.
  •  Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research.
  •  Coordinates the revamping and ensures effective running of the APDIM website including its content development and preparation working closely with ESCAP communication team and other parties as relevant.
  •  Prepares, on the basis of official APDIM and ESCAP documentation and other sources, initials drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in ESCAP and APDIM newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
  •  In consultation with others identifies and proposes communications and information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  •  Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
  •  Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
  •  Responds to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.
  •  Performs other related duties as assigned

Education

  • A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
  • Experience in working in disaster risk reduction or climate change programmes is desirable.
  • Prior experience in the United Nations Common System is desirable.

Languages

  • English or French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Persian is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
