Data Science Assistant

This position is located in the Laboratory and Scientific Services (LSS), Drugs, Laboratory and Scientific Services Branch (DLSSB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Scientific Affairs Officer leading the early warning portfolio of LSS, and with the overall guidance of the Chief, Drugs, Laboratory and Scientific Services Branch (DLSSB). 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and maintain code for processing high volume data sources into LSS databases.
  • Contribute to the preparation of responses to requests for exploration, identification, and acquisition of data sources to determine their suitability for use in decision making and advancing the goals of the organization. Liaise with other team members to address requests.
  • Support more senior staff in maintaining a working relationship with key clients to leverage the use of data science methods to support their programmatic areas through solutions built by the team and by providing communication through channels such as meetings, email and other means.
  • Contribute to the provision of client training and developing products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices. 
  • Adjust customized visualization and presentation products to reveal the findings of analysis for clients.
  • Prepare data sets upon request; respond to queries/requests and maintain/update web pages.
  • Contribute to the preparation of input for the design and development of data science products and provide an understanding or knowledge of the data through the application of analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, data and text mining, natural language processing, statistics, and use of relevant algorithms and computational approaches. 
  • Contribute to data analysis and reporting, focusing on early identification of key trends.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of data visualisations for web- based portals of LSS as well as for reports and alerts. 
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of seven years of experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, or related area is required.
  • The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.   
  • Experience in analysis of large datasets and creation of data visualization outputs to aid decision-making and communications is desirable.   
  • Experience in areas related to drug control and crime prevention is desirable.   
  • Experience working within the United Nations system and/or other similar international organizations is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
