Job Description


Epicenter uses, among other things, the VBA programming language in Excel to manage certain aspects of data collection and management in several clinical trials and for epidemiological surveillance. This position aims to increase our internal capacities in Excel / VBA programming, in particular on a multi-country cohort study on Lassa fever. Within the Data Science team, integrated in the Research department, the main tasks of the Excel / VBA programmer will be:

Main activities

In collaboration with the permanent team and users:

  • Qualify the needs,
  • Develop iteratively tools for monitoring clinical trials and for surveillance, by exchanging regularly with users,
  • Integrate these VBA tools into data management processes (clinical databases, R scripts for cleaning and visualization, R Shiny Dashboard),
  • Participate in communication and training on the use of these tools,
  • Ensure the monitoring of actual operation and maintenance,
  • Clearly document the technical details of your work to facilitate collaboration with other team members and ensure quality control,
  • Capitalize on existing VBA tools to improve them or facilitate reuse in other contexts,
  • Act as a technical expert with data entry teams in the field and be able to respond to ad hoc data requests from project stakeholders.

Profile required

  •  Bachelor or Master in Computer Science, Biostatistics, or other diploma with a strong quantitative component applied;
  •  1 to 5 years of relevant experience. Experience in public health data science highly desirable;
  •  Mastery of Excel / VBA programming (mandatory),
  •  Ability to work with R, and experience with electronic data collection tools, such as REDcap or ODK (preferable);
  •  Experience working and managing large data sets, including merging disparate data sets, cleaning and transforming data, and providing preliminary descriptive statistics;
  •  Appreciation of the fundamental principles of effective data visualization;
  •  Ability to work with people of various profiles (doctors, nurses, data entry operators, epidemiologists, etc.)
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French and English;
  •  GitHub portfolio or other examples of accessible codes desired.
