This position is located in the Commercial Insurance Section (CIS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS).   The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, Offices Away from Headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.  The incumbent will report to the Chief, Commercial Insurance Section, Division of Administration.

Responsibilities:

  • Administers commercial insurance programmes including insurance policies for aviation, malicious acts, cargo, cash in transit, liability, property, and others, covering United Nations (UN) Offices, peacekeeping missions as well as Agencies, Funds and Programmes at Headquarters, Offices Away from Headquarters and overseas.
  • This entails participating in the insurance procurement process by seeking and consolidating exposure information, reviewing policy specifications, evaluating insurance procurement proposals and preparing presentations for financial commitments; monitoring expenditures and ensuring the equitable allocation of insurance premiums among client offices; carrying out premium reconciliations; monitoring, collecting data and processing insurance claims, communicating with UN insurance brokers and other clients. 
  • Undertakes and ensures that correspondence and queries from UN Offices at Headquarters and overseas as well as UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes on risk management and commercial insurance matters, are appropriately handled. This includes review of contracts referred by the Procurement Service and other offices to ensure that appropriate insurance provisions, adequate coverage and appropriate protections are in place.
  • Guides, trains and develops other staff in the Section as appropriate.
  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings on matters related to risk management and prepares presentation material as appropriate.
  • Prepares Scope of Work, technical evaluation criteria and other activities needed for procurement of insurance broker services for various policies.
  • Prepares documents in Umoja and creates iNeed tickets as necessary to ensure insurance premium is paid, allocated and recovered. This includes performing necessary reconciliations and other payments for assigned insurance policies.
  • Undertakes and performs special assignments as and when needed, particularly with respect to risk management initiatives.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in finance, business administration or related area is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in business administration, accounting or finance with responsibilities for risk management and/or commercial insurance is required.   
  • Experience in the selection and management of commercial insurance vendors is required.   
  • Experience providing risk management solutions and/or evaluating commercial insurance contracts for a large organization is required.   
  • Experience in interpreting and applying United Nations or any similar large-scale international organization's financial and staff regulations, rules and procedures or insurance policies is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
