Job Overview

The Legal Services team delivers legal advice and services to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), including its President, Board of Governors and Committees, and IDRC staff in Canada and abroad. It has the primary role of ensuring IDRC’s legal integrity and compliance.
IDRC is seeking a corporate and commercial lawyer with 3-5 years of experience in legal practice. Supporting the Director of Legal Services, the successful candidate will deliver legal services and advice across all areas of IDRC’s corporate activity, including the negotiation and drafting of agreements, management of risk, intellectual property matters, labour and employment matters, and maintenance of organizational practices and policies in line with applicable law and the highest standards of corporate ethics.

Candidate Profile


  • LL.B. or J.D. from a recognized Canadian law school
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario at the time of hiring


  • 3-5 years of relevant corporate/commercial legal practice experience


  • English/French at an intermediate level


  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Strong judgment, personal integrity, discretion and tact
  • Solid legal research, analytical and writing skills
  • Business awareness, a commitment to excellent client service, and a motivation to proactively support IDRC’s mandate
  • Responsiveness, versatility, and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate and allocate responsibilities with a collegial and interdisciplinary team
