The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.   At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and implements day-to-day content development, scheduling, and multi-platform dissemination across official social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, and YouTube, ensuring strategic alignment with the objectives of the Convention and its Protocols. 
  • Plans and supports the execution of thematic digital campaigns and public outreach events, such as the International Day for Biological Diversity and other UN-recognized observances, in collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders.   
  • Drafts, reviews, and edits content derived from high-level speeches and official statements by the Executive Secretary, adapts this material for digital channels, ensuring coherence with messaging standards and audience-specific formats.   
  • Monitors emerging digital trends, tools, and analytics to develop data-informed content strategies; provides actionable recommendations to enhance visibility, reach, and engagement across digital platforms. 
  •  Serves as focal point for social media and digital content matters, coordinating with thematic leads and external partners, provides strategic input, prepares trend analyses, and advises on platform and content optimization.   
  • Coordinates and maintains content updates for the Convention’s website, working closely with technical teams to ensure timely publication of accurate, accessible, and visually engaging information; supports website content planning as part of a broader digital strategy. 
  • Provides administrative and logistical support to the unit, including preparing official correspondence, managing participant registration for events, maintaining mailing lists, and processing forms and documentation in accordance with established procedures.   
  • Undertakes other duties as assigned, including internal reporting, knowledge-sharing contributions, and support to crosscutting communication and outreach initiatives.   
  • Manages the publication of multimedia and written content by uploading videos to the organization's YouTube channel and publishing approved communications to the news and updates section of the CBD website via the Secretariat’s Content Management System.   
  • Including but not limited to, providing administrative support to the unit by drafting letters, registering participants to attend our meetings, filling out administrative forms.   
  •  Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. 
  •  Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. 
  • Perform other duties as required.

 Education:

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of social media management, digital marketing or a related field is required.
  • The minimum years of experience is reduced to five years for candidates who possess a first level university degree.    Experience with communication, marketing or public relations agencies is desirable.   
  • Experience in environmental communication and advocacy is desirable.   
  • Work experience in supporting activities in the field of biodiversity is desirable.   
  • One year or more experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this job opening, English is required.
  • French is desirable.
