Responsibilities:

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 150 governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the direct supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications, the Consultant will work closely with the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Officer to: Strategically plan, organize and oversee operationalization of the stakeholder days in advance of the sessions of the IPBES Plenary:
  • Provide strategic planning guidance and manage logistical arrangements for stakeholder days—including driving project team collaboration, agenda-setting, outreach, and event management for both in-person and online participation. 
  • In-person management of stakeholder day event logistics, poster sessions, speaker management, liaison with technical teams and local partners, and oversight of webcast elements.
  • Identification and expansion of relevant stakeholder networks per plenary session, with a specific focus on widening local and regional stakeholder engagement in the host country and with underrepresented IPBES stakeholder groups. 

Requirements:

  • A university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience is required in stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network building, or communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise drafts in English are required.
  • Good organizational and personal management skills, with the ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through, are required.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with environmental issues and knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity, and environment-related matters is desirable.
  • Experience in an international organization or intergovernmental context—especially in the United Nations—is desirable.
